On April 22nd, Dan passed away. His life and ministry were interwoven in the history of the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C. and the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. His legacy and inspiration live on in so many of us. This blog is offered as a place to celebrate Dan's life and memory, and as holy space to share our grief.

"A Life Well-Lived"
A life well-lived,
a plan I had not,
the joy I know, the peace within,
by my will alone,
I would have forgot.
Faith and reason,
goals and dreams;
to focus on one,
or a balance between?
The things I know
you can look up on a chart,
the things I love
live deep in my heart.
It is these things, I tell you,
that are the gifts from above;
it is these things, I tell you,
where grace meets love.
Here are some words
to be aware:
Community,
Covenant,
Faith,
and Prayer.
And here are some thoughts
to ponder each day:
“Don’t be afraid, take some chances”,
“Don’t be afraid, you have nothing to fear”,
“Don’t be afraid, I am with you”,
“Be still and know that I AM here.”
What does it mean,
a life well-lived?
I can’t tell you, except for me
a life well-lived
is lived for Thee
i remember at some point in time while i was with the trustees, we were trying to sell one of our church properties on ridge street. i received a call that the inspection report indicated the house had termites.
i called dan in a panic, "dan, 462 ridge street has termites!" he chuckled and told me he didn't think there was a house on ridge street that did not have termites. he said he would send his pest control contractor over the next day. i slept soundly that night.
Dan was my friend and taught me so much. The way he lived his life inspired me. He also saw something in me, that I didn't even see. He believed in me.
Dan and I had a conversation one day about timeliness. He told me that he went back to school around age 40. He said that being sober really helped him make this decision. Dan was the catalyst for me going back to school at age 40, striving for a Masters in Social Work. So, when I stand on that stage and receive my Master's Degree, I will think of him and say a thank you.
I will always remember Dan's smile. It will comfort me in the days to come...
